Particle Accelerator DI Cooling – Skid‑Mounted System

  • Client: CERN
  • Cooling Power: 140 kW
  • Temperature Range: 15–25°C with ±1°C tolerance
  • Conductivity: < 0.2 µS/cm
  • Dissolved Oxygen: < 50 ppb via membrane degassing
  • System Capacity: Skidmounted polishing/pumping loop with precision control and oxygen management
  • Interesting System features: Standalone or integrated to site master control; gasketed plate heat exchanger for ease of maintenance; built to extensive client specification; full FAT, install and training provided by GRE

For accelerator beamline components, thermal drift and ionic contamination directly affect alignment and uptime.

DI treatment comprised mixedbed polishing, followed by 0.2 μm pointofuse filtration to avoid ‘blow-over’. Flow metering on the loop verifies ideal velocity for heat transfer. The PLC implements cascade temperature control (loadside sensor primary, supply sensor secondary) and incorporates interlocks on flow/pressure/conductivity, plus event timestamping and datalogging for experiment traceability.

Mechanically, 316L stainless tube with hygienic fittings simplifies maintenance; all welds are inspected and passivated post fabrication. Elastomer selection, where required were chosen in order to avoid leaching at elevated temperatures. Redundant communication paths and many other features reduce control system downtime during runs. The combination of rigorous water quality management and precise thermal control gives researchers a repeatable platform for long experimental campaigns.
